Walking is one of my favorite outdoor activities. I've made it part of my weekly routine for over twenty years. What started as a way to exercise my first dog, a Husky named Bailey, quickly became a way to also connect with a friend. When children came along, I simply strapped them into a stroller and brought them along. Walking helped me recover from four pregnancies. Besides, spending time outdoors has been part of my life since I was a child, so introducing my babies to the great outdoors was just second nature.
The benefits of walking are more than physical. It gives your brain time to process, pon-der, pray, and unwind. Walking engages your senses as you take in the beauty around you through what you see, smell, hear, and feel as you encounter the elements and your feet pound the pavement or trail.
As I've already mentioned, walking can kill two birds with one stone: you can check the exercise box off your to-do list while getting caught up with a friend! The miles go by so much faster when you're talking.
Because walking is part of my routine throughout the year, having the proper accessories to make the endeavor comfortable is important. Snow and below freezing temperatures have never stopped me. I just layer up with a cashmere headband and neck warmer and mittens, and I don't have to worry about losing body heat while I stroll the streets of my neighborhood or play in the snow with my dogs.
